Winter 2024
We are thrilled to reconnect and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to advancing the National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition and Health, spearheaded with bipartisan support from the Congressional HungerCaucus. Through this newsletter, we aim to share updates, celebrate progress and inspire collective action on this critical initiative. Together, we have the power to create profound and lasting change for the health and well-being of communities across the nation.
Across the United States, millions of people continue to grapple with barriers to accessing nutritious food. Feeding America reports that 47 million individuals—including 1 in 5 children—experience food insecurity. Food insecurity remains a pervasive challenge, demanding bold and unified solutions.
The National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition and Health embodies hope and action. This initiative has galvanized diverse public and private partnerships—healthcare systems, faith-based organizations, academic institutions, philanthropic groups and community-based organizations—to unite in pursuit of a shared vision. There are exciting accomplishments, yet much still needs to be completed.
We are proud to contribute to this transformative journey through the following actions:
Raising Awareness: Highlighting the critical link between nutrition insecurity and health outcomes.
Fostering Partnerships: Collaborating with diverse stakeholders to tackle complex food system challenges and create sustainable solutions.
Supporting Local Initiatives: Championing efforts like the Georgia Hunger & Health Summit to drive impact at the state and community levels.
Elevating Community Voices: Ensuring insights from community-based organizations inform and guide national strategies.
Targeting Special Needs: Addressing focused areas such as maternal health through initiatives like the Nutrition in PregnancyAction Network.
Tracking Progress: Monitoring over 200 commitments made to date and showcasing innovative approaches that improve food quality and affordability.
Collaboration is the cornerstone of this work, and we are deeply inspired by the dedication of our partners. We stand committed to supporting essential work taking place across the country. Together we can create a future where no one experiences hunger, and everyone has access tohealthy, affordable and nutritious food. Let us continue this journey with renewed determination and hope. Together, we can achieve lasting impact and transform lives. Thank you for being a vital part of this mission.

The Georgia Hunger and Health Summit, held on October 28-29, 2024, brought together over 100 leaders from various sectors across Georgia to address hunger, food insecurity, and the need for a resilient, equitable food system. The event, hosted in Atlanta by the Hunger, Nutrition &Health Action Collaborative in partnership with other organizations, sparked critical statewide conversations. Trabian Shorters—author, entrepreneur and creator of Asset-Framing®—shared insights on developing strength-based narratives. His approach has been adopted globally to strengthen advocacy, fundraising, and community engagement. The event also included panel presentations on advocacy, partnership innovations and community voices. Special thanks to our partners for making this impactful event possible.
In September 2024, the CDC Foundation hosted a gathering of grantees from across the U.S. as part of the Hunger, Nutrition and Health NationalAction Collaborative. The meeting aimed to bridge community priorities with national efforts to address hunger and health equity. Over the next nine months, these grantees will collaborate in the “HNH-CBO InnovationLab” to create multi-sector solutions that enhance food security and nutrition. Participants included staff from the Corbin Hill Food Project(NYC), La Semilla Food Services (NM), Hmong American Farmers Association (MN), Dreaming Out Loud (D.C.), Brotherhood Sister Sol(NYC), Higher Purpose Co. (MS), Kokoa Kalihi Valley (HI), Urban Growers Collective (IL), Dream of Wild Health (MN), Farmer Frog and the Fresh Food Coalition (WA) and DAISA Enterprises (MA). Together, these partners are paving the way for a healthier and more sustainable food system nationwide.
Recently, on a sunny Saturday morning in Atlanta, the Harlem Globetrotters and KABOOM!, a national nonprofit working to end playspace inequity, brought together elementary school students for an interactive event encouraging children and families to think about different ways children and families can have fun and be physically active.
